How to Handle Common Dental Emergencies

In the heat of the moment, it can be hard to wrack your brain for what first-aid techniques you should use to prevent any additional damage from occurring. That’s why our team is available to help! If you’re experiencing any discomfort or out-of-the-ordinary symptoms, the first thing you should do is contact our office. For your convenience, we’ve also included some basic tips below to handle the most common dental emergencies.

Toothaches

Toothaches can occur for an issue as small as a lodged piece of popcorn between your teeth or as serious as a tooth infection. Gently maneuver a piece of dental floss around your affected tooth and rinse with salt water. If your pain persists, contact our office immediately so we can address the underlying problem. You can take ibuprofen to help with the pain in the meantime.

Chipped / Broken Tooth

If your chipped or broken tooth is sharp, you can place a piece of sugar-free gum over the area to keep it from wounding your oral tissue. Bring the broken-off piece of your tooth to our office, and based on the extent of the damage, we’ll develop a treatment plan to repair your smile.

Knocked-Out Tooth

If your tooth is knocked-out, it’s important to visit our office as soon as possible, preferably within an hour of the incident. Pick up your tooth from the ground, being sure to only handle it by the biting surface. Gently rinse it under cool water and place it in a container of milk or salt water to keep it moist. Bring it to our office with you so we can attempt to replant it back in its socket.

Lost Filling / Crown

You can temporarily reattach your filling or crown if you’re able to find it by applying a small dab of toothpaste or denture adhesive to the area and securing it back on your tooth. Keep in mind that this is a temporary solution, so you’ll still need to visit our office so we can repair or reattach the restoration.

How to Prevent Dental Emergencies

While it’s impossible to prevent all dental emergencies, there are a few simple things you can do day to day to make sure you never have to make a surprise visit to the dentist:

  • Always wear a mouthguard while playing sports, no matter your age or level of play.
  • Don’t chew on extremely hard things like ice or rock candies.
  • Don’t use your teeth as tools to open bottles or packages.
  • Come see us for routine checkups and cleanings so we can catch and treat a small problem before it turns into an emergency later.

The Cost of Treating Dental Emergencies

Every dental emergency is different depending on the damage that your mouth has sustained and what type of treatment you require, which means that we’ll need to examine your mouth before we’re able to provide you with the cost for your appointment. We’ll discuss each of your treatment options with you as well as your financial options. We offer affordable monthly payment plans through CareCredit and also accept and file insurance claims for you!
